🧩 What are Fortnite Sprites? A beginner’s guide
New to Sprites? This is the start-here. Sprites are collectible creatures in Fortnite Battle Royale that give you a perk when equipped — and collecting, leveling and “mastering” them is a game within the game. Here’s how the whole system works, in plain terms.
What a Sprite actually does
You equip one Sprite to your back, and it grants an ability — some are passive (e.g. heal a little when you deal damage), others are active (e.g. a dash or a double-jump). The ability gets stronger as the Sprite levels up, from Level 1 to Level 5. Each Sprite also has a rarity (Rare → Epic → Legendary → Mythic) that mostly reflects how hard it is to find.
How to get your first Sprite
In this season (“Override”) there are three main sources:
- Hack the Lobby codes — the quickest start. Open the Admin Panel in the lobby, type a free code, and claim the Sprite’s Cheat Master finish. Grab today’s from the Lobby Hack codes list.
- In-world Cheat Codes — panels sprayed on walls and floors around the map; interact to unlock a Sprite. Their spots are randomized each match, so drop where they’re densest.
- Sprite Chests — any chest can drop any Sprite; rarity sets the odds, not the location.
The golden rule: extract it, or lose it
This trips up every new collector: a Sprite isn’t yours until you extract it. Equip it to your back, then reach an Extraction Site (or use a Portable Extractor) and extract before the match ends. Get eliminated first and it’s gone — only extracted Sprites count toward your collection.
Finishes (the different looks)
Each Sprite comes in several finishes — Normal, Gold, Cheat Master, Loot Hacker, Bounty Hunter and seasonal recolours like Trick-or-Treat. A finish is mostly cosmetic (it keeps the base ability), though some add a small bonus. Cheat Master is the green “code” finish unlocked by a lobby code; Loot Hacker (blue circuit) boosts your chance of Loot Hack items from chests.
Leveling & mastery (the long game)
Keep a Sprite equipped and it earns level points as you loot and fight. Extract it at Level 5 to “master” it, which unlocks rewards — including the free Quack finishes that speed up your whole collection. Full details in the leveling & mastery guide.
Generations: Override vs the archived Runners
The Sprites you collect and use right now are the Chapter 7 Season 4 “Override” generation. The older Season 3 “Runners” Sprites are archived in your in-game Sprite Garden — kept forever, but not used in Battle Royale this season. Each new season adds a generation; your past ones stay with you.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to equip the Sprite to your back before extracting — one left in your inventory won’t extract.
- Throwing a Sprite into the extractor instead of walking up and pressing Extract (it can register wrong).
- Hoarding Sprite Dust through a season flip — spend or reset it first so it isn’t wasted.
- Dropping first in a trade — trades are in-game and at your own risk; see the trading guide.
FAQ
What are Sprites in Fortnite?
Sprites are collectible little creatures in Fortnite Battle Royale. You equip one to your back, and it grants a passive or active ability that gets stronger as it levels up. The current generation is Chapter 7 Season 4 “Override.”
How do you get your first Sprite?
Fastest: open the Admin Panel in the lobby and enter a free Hack the Lobby code (each unlocks a Sprite’s Cheat Master finish). In matches, activate the Cheat Code panels sprayed around the map, and open Sprite Chests — any chest can drop any Sprite.
Why do I keep losing Sprites?
A Sprite isn’t yours until you extract it. Equip it to your back and use an Extraction Site or Portable Extractor before the match ends — if you’re eliminated first, it’s gone.
Do Sprites cost money?
No. Every Sprite is earned in-game for free — there’s nothing to buy. This tracker is free too.
How many Sprites are there?
There are dozens across the current Override generation plus the archived Season 3 “Runners” set. You can see and track them all on the full checklist.
